Over recent years there has been a lot in the news about overweight and obesity. The research tells us that as a Nation, each new generation is tipping the scales a little more than their parents…so its no surprise that the NSW Government has made a commitment to turning this around for our kids.
One startling fact worth quoting is that in 2016, almost one quarter (22%) of the State’s kids 5-16years were above a healthy weight.
But WHAT are we doing about it here in Penrith, Blue Mountains, Hawkesbury and Lithgow LGAs?
Locally we have some great programs operating in schools to support teachers, parents and kids. Programs like Munch and Move, Live Life Well @School and Go4Fun aim to create a healthy environment for kids to learn healthy, lifelong habits which are reinforced at school everyday.
To complement these state-wide programs, the Health Promotion Team at Nepean Blue Mountains Local Health District have recently produced a new resource. The book, called ‘Student Health- Everybody’s Business’ is available for free download from our Program & Resources Page. It is jam packed full of ideas which will help P&C (or P&F) groups to build a healthier school community by looking at examples of how to make small changes for a big long-term impact.
In addition to these great prevention programs, we are fortunate to have the FIRST family focussed obesity clinic in the State, located here in Penrith. The clinic opened in April 2017 and provides medical, nutritional, physical and emotional support for those families who need that extra help to get on track. Read more about the clinic.
